Island
Guan Wei 2002

Concept:

1. This work is trying to express a religious emotion about
human living conditions at the present time. It also pays
close attention to human destiny in the future.
Environmental damage and increasing population are
causing our living space to become smaller; there are
large numbers of immigrants and refugees around world,
conflict between humans; environmental degradation, with
religious intolerance getting ever worse, with people
becoming more and more estranged. The resulting
isolation and estrangement create suffering for human life
at the present. So, people feel disturbed, senseless,
    solitary and experience dread.
2. In the painting there are some islands surrounded by
ocean. Some of the human figures on the island are
fighting, some are thinking, some pray and some run.
Because they are on islands, there seems nowhere to go.
3. This painting is largely covered with the image of water.
The technique of expressing water borrows from traditional
Chinese painting. The water image endlessly repeat lines
that tend to formularize and generalize the composition
giving the painting a mysterious feeling. Also, some old
eastern and western map images and western

medieval art will be used in this painting. All elements mix together to express a consciousness of crisis and misery

Composition and installation:

1. The painting forms with 48 panels, each panel is 102 x 51

drawing. The painting hangs in 3 rows, each row contains
16 panels. There is a 7 cm space between each row and
each panel. The bottom row should be 40 cm above floor.
The total space requires of this painting is 921 x 320 (cm)
    including the spacing.
2. There is about 1 ton of sand required for the installation.
An oval shaped sand hill should set up in front of the
painting (921 x 200 cm). The space between sand hill and
painting is 150 cm (refer to attachment).
3. There are about 20 objects installed on the sand hill,
including china, bottles, glasses, a clock and TV. The 51
or 68 cm video TV set in the middle of the sand hill, will
